A Quick Guide to Bolster the Security of your Facebook Account

Facebook is a well-known social platform for connecting with people, but it is also a birthplace for most of the online woes. Online predators sometimes misuse people’s posts, statuses, images, videos, etc. against them. This is why it is highly suggested that you update your Facebook settings to secure your Facebook account. For those who know nothing or little about Facebook settings, you should follow this guide to update the settings so that no one can misuse the information posted on your Facebook account.

1. Check Which Information to Hide

Before changing the security settings, you need to know what needs to be changed, and the best way to know this is by getting to know how other people, particularly those who are not in your friend list, see your profile. You can check this by going to settings, privacy and then Timeline and Tagging. Click on the “View As” option located opposite to “Who can see things on my Timeline”. This will take you to your profile page, showing only those things which are visible to other people. Review the page in order to change settings accordingly.
Now go back to Timeline and Tagging and click the drop-down menu in front of “Who can see posts you’ve been tagged on your Timeline”. Also, check the drop-down menu in front of “Who can see what others post on your Timeline”. It’s better not to make this information public.

2. Check Browsing Settings

Go to Settings and then to Security. Enable the Secure Browsing option. Also enable Log-in Notifications, Login Approvals, Recognized Devices, Active Sessions, etc. Enabling all these features will enhance the security of your Facebook account. You can enable tem by pressing on “Edit” button in front of each option and selecting the relevant option.

3. Limit Access to Your Posts

It’s not safe for you to share your every post and status with everyone. Thanks to Facebook, you can now restrict access to not only your future posts, but also your past posts. Just go to Privacy in Settings menu. Click on the “Limit the audience for posts you’ve shared with friends of friends or Public” option, located under “Who can see my stuff”. A pop-up window will appear, giving you the warning that these changes will not be undone. Click on Confirm to complete the process.

4. Control Posts Shown on Your Timeline

You have already selected who can view posts on your wall (see step one). You can also choose who can post anything on your Timeline. In addition, you can review each post before allowing it to appear on your Timeline. Just go to Timeline and Tagging in the Security menu. There will be an option under “Who can add things to my Timeline”. Press the edit button to select the relevant settings. There will also be an option “How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions. There will be three sub-categories under this category, all of which will allow you to control who tags you and what they tag. Click on the edit button in front of each category to select the relevant option.

5. Don’t Let Apps Compromise Your Security and Privacy

Majority of the apps collect personal information from your Facebook account in order to function properly. Some of them can even post on your Timeline. You can control the information taken by these apps by going to Apps in Security menu. You will come across all the apps you are using. There will be an option to edit and remove on the right side of each app. If you are not using the app, then simple delete it, otherwise go to edit and change the app visibility to “only me”. You also need to stop other people from using your information while using apps. For this purpose, go to edit button on “Apps others use”, uncheck all or some of the categories and then save the settings.

Facebook keeps on introducing new changes in its security settings. You must keep an eye on these changes in order to benefit from the updates and enhance your online security.
