This new streaming service will go against the likes of HBO and Netflix.
The China-based company Alibaba has risen to popularity at a pretty frantic pace as it has become a force to be reckoned with in such a small time. However, the tech giant does not want to stop here as it has announced its own streaming service called Tmall Box Office (TBO).
Alibaba’s head of digital entertainment Patrick Liu made this announcement in a meeting with reporters, where he said that the goal of this new service is “to become like HBO in the United States, to become like Netflix in the United States”.
China is a huge market and if Alibaba succeeds in its plan of coming up with the new streaming service, then the brands like Netflix, HBO, Apple and Google will receive a huge blow because these tech giants had their sights set on China.
This does not mean that other major streaming services will completely flop in China, but now they have a bigger challenge on their hands as Chinese people will naturally favor the service that has been specifically crafted for them.
The scale of Alibaba’s streaming service is still unknown, but now that cat is out of the bag, we will surely get to hear a lot more details about it in the near future.
