During an interview at Sen. Orrin Hatch’s Utah Tech Tour in Salt Lake City, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that augmented reality (AR) is going to be the next big thing in technology. Virtual reality (VR) does have potential to be something great but it won’t be as big of a deal as AR.
“AR I think is going to become really big. VR, I think, is not gonna be that big, compared to AR.”
VR gadgets are already out and are doing rather well, however, there’s no augmented reality machine in sight. Cook realizes that as well and explains that AR is a very complicated technology to work on, so it’s going to be a while before it becomes conventional.
“AR is gonna take a little while, because there’s some really hard technology challenges there. But it will happen. It will happen in a big way. And we will wonder, when it does [happen], how we lived without it. Kind of how we wonder how we lived without our [smartphones] today.”
These statements from Cook pretty much outs Apple’s plans for an AR gadget, but as he said, it’s going to be a while before we can get our hands on the new technology.
