How to Bypass or Disable Net Nanny

Net Nanny is both an excellent parental control solution as well as a remarkable internet filtering tool that was termed Editor’s Choice for parental controls by Although there is plenty to like about this tool, it rarely feels good to find your online freedom restricted by it. Internet is a vast world that demands unrestricted exploration, but Net Nanny takes that away. So if you’re stuck on the wrong side of this software, then don’t worry because TechoMag is here to show you the route to freedom. In this guide, we’ll share all the known ways to disable or bypass Net Nanny and regain your digital freedom.

Method 1: Close Process from Task Manager

Most probably the best way to disable/bypass Net Nanny is through Task Manager. The developers have done a pretty decent job of giving it at least some extent of stealth ability, so it won’t show in the main window of Task Manager. However, if you go to Processes tabs, you will be able to discover it there, though it’s really that straight-forward. First thing you have to do is disable a process named “Ocraware.” To do that, click this particular process, and click the End Process button. Now, look for the “Wnldr32” process and end it as well. Now “Net Nanny” will show up in the processes tabs. Just close it the same way you closed Ocraware and Wnldr32. This will disable the solution from your computer and allow you to access blocked sites. Just remember that this is a temporary fix and will only work as long as you don’t restart your computer to bypass net nanny.

Method 2: Change Startup Programs

This process is pretty simple. Just go to Start menu and type “msconfig” in the search bar. Once you find it, open it and a new window will pop up with multiple tabs. Click on the Startup tab to view all the programs that launch on your computer when Window starts. If Net Nanny is enabled, then you will see a couple of boxes named “NNSvsc” and “nntray.exe” checked. Uncheck both these boxes and restart your computer. Now, Windows will not launch Net Nanny upon boot up, thus allowing you to access the sites that were blocked earlier.

Method 3: Make Use of VPN

There are tons of VPNs (virtual private networks) available on the web and almost all of them are capable of bypassing Net Nanny. Just download the one that you think is easy to use and change your server to any other country. As soon as your server is switched, Net Nanny will lose control, and you’ll be able to roam the web freely. However, the biggest downside of VPN is that you won’t be able to get good speed. So do keep in mind that you will be sacrificing your speed in order to gain access to the blocked content.

Method 4: Use Proxy Websites

If you want to visit a blocked website but don’t want to go through a lot of hassle, then you can use any proxy site. There are a lot of them available out there and they all work incredibly well. Through them, you can gain access to any website you want and Net Nanny won’t be able to do anything about it because the URL would be different. This is one of the simplest ways to gain access to content that is blocked.

Method 5: Disabling/Bypass Net Nanny Permanently

Just remember to follow the instructions very carefully while doing this process. First, you need to open “c:\windows\system.ini.”. To get there quickly, open Start menu and type “system.ini” in the search field. Select the file from the search result and click on it. Now carefully scan the text and look for the section marked “[boot]”. Right under this section, you’ll notice a line labelled “drivers=” followed by a list of other things. Look for “wndrv16.dll” and delete it by selecting it and pressing the backspace key. Remember to leave everything else as it is. Now close the file after saving the changes and reboot your computer. The parental control-cum-internet filtering tool will be gone permanently.

Note: Some of the methods mentioned above may not work on the newer versions of Net Nanny.
