Virtual reality is an entirely new medium that people believe will eventually become the future of gaming. Oculus wanted to be the first one to step into the market and earn its place at the top on the list of best virtual reality companies, and it was just that as it launched its Rift VR headset in the first quarter of this year. However, HTC Vive headset arrived just a week later, and has since outclassed Oculus Rift in almost every way. To put it in simple words, HTC Vive is fantastic. It’s user-friendly, contains all the gear you need, and most importantly, it comes with all of it in one package. You won’t have to wait for anything and you won’t have to pay for anything that’s going to come out sometime in the future. Everything you need to get the premium VR experience is right there in the box. Let’s spend the next few minutes looking at why HTC Vive is the best VR headset of 2016.
What Exactly Do You Get?
Upon purchasing this VR device, you get a headset, two motion controllers, two base stations, and a bridge that helps connect HTC Vive with your computer. Oculus Rift, as awesome as it is, doesn’t contain any base station, and it doesn’t have any controllers either. However, with Vive you don’t have to worry about anything. You just plug it in, set up the game, and you’re good to go. With the help of controllers, you can play the game rather easily. With the help of base stations, your head movements are tracked way more accurately. Also, these base stations allow you to move in 4.5m x 4.5m area, which can be used to traverse in the game’s world. Finally, there’s the headset which works amazingly well as it outputs 1080p full HD display.
How is HTC Vive Better than Oculus Rift?
There’s no questioning the fact that Oculus Rift is an amazing VR machine, but it is not a complete package. If you pay $600 for it, then only thing you are given is the headset, which outputs same quality as given by HTC Vive. So waste your money on it. Just by paying additional $200, you can get your hands on Vive, which comes with all of the stuff mentioned in the above point. All of those combined help make it the best VR experience available at the moment. There’s no way Oculus can match that success without having a controller or base stations. Without these two things, you can’t play as you want to, your head movement doesn’t get tracked accurately, and most importantly, it is not as user-friendly as Vive. HTC Wins This Round, But the Race is Far from Over
As established above, HTC has a complete package on offer, but that will change as Oculus has announced that it will be coming up with motion controllers of its own in the near future. Also, PlayStation VR headset is coming in October, which also has a potential to be a game changer. So, as of now, HTC does have the upper hand, but it’s not likely that things would stay the same in the coming months. PlayStation 4 has over 40 million users and even if half of them opt for PSVR, then that could be a huge deal. As successful as Oculus Rift and Vive are, they certainly are not at the point where they could be considered a force to be reckoned with. However, Sony with its PS4 momentum could really establish a new VR marketplace. Until then, however, HTC is your best option if you are looking to get into VR. Of course, there are other companies with VR devices as well that you can explore, like Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR for example.
