Hackers have started to really get out of hand lately as in just the last twelve months, there have been multiple cyber attacks on the US soil only. No one is safe as the big corporations, dating sites, and even security agencies are being targeted. To give you an idea of how proficient hackers have become, we have made a list outlining all the cyber attacks that took place in US over the course of past twelve months.
November 2014
Sony Pictures Entertainment
Last year, Sony created a movie called The Interview that made fun of North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un. The offended government retaliated by launching an attack on Sony Entertainment where they got their hands on private data and some classified information. Some of the confidential data attained in this attack was also released to general public.
Different Websites
The hacking group that goes by the name of Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) claimed responsibility for an attack on different sites, including Forbes, Chicago Tribune, CNBC, GoDaddy, PC World, and The Independent.
December 2014
Staples, Inc.
Security experts found malware hidden inside 115 different stores. This security breach affected over 1.16 million credit cards.
Chick-Fil-A
A credit card breach occurred at Chick-Fil-A which affected over 9000 users.
Las Vegas Sands Corp.
The Sands Casino database was hacked by a group of Iranian hackers. They managed to stop the $14 billion operation by shutting down their computers and servers. Furthermore, they cleaned up all the hard drives they could access, damaging Sands corporation big time.
January 2015
Morgan Stanley
After being fired, a disgruntled employee leaked account numbers of more than 350,000 clients of Morgan Stanley. However, the damage was very minimal in the attack, as all the data was removed from the source soon after.
February 2015
Forbes
A group that goes by the name Codoso Team hacked into Forbes.com and used it to target US defense contractors and financial service companies.
Uber
One of Uber databases were hacked, affecting as many as 50,000 drivers all over the country.
Anthem, Inc.
A cyber attack on Anthem compromised security numbers, birthdates, addresses, and employee information of over 80 million customers.
March 2015
Register.com
Register.com, a domain registration website, was found to have stayed under attack for over a year. Some experts believe that this attack was carried out by the Chinese military.
Premera Blue Cross
This healthcare institution also became a victim of an attack in which financial information of 11 million people got affected.
May 2015
CareFirst, BlueCross, BlueShield
It is estimated that around 1.1 million current and former customers of the mentioned healthcare institutions were affected in a cyber attack. Their usernames, real names, birthdates, and emails were compromised. However, the companies did manage to save social security numbers, medical, and financial records.
Adult Friend Finder
Adult Friend Finder contained data of a large number of users and the hackers managed to get their hands on almost all of it as more than 3.9 million accounts were compromised.
Penn State University
It was revealed by The College of Engineering at PSU that a security breach existed at their premises for more than two years. Even after reporting such duration, the institute was adamant that none of their staff or students were affected. However, just as a precaution, over 18000 students were notified that their social security numbers could have been compromised.
Beacon Health System
The healthcare firm became a victim of a phishing attack in which hackers took away employee emails and the data of 300,000 patients.
July 2015
United Airlines
It is reported that United Airlines came under attack by cybercrime group Black Vine, who got their hands on company’s records, including flight manifests.
Ashley Madison
The adult website came under attack by a group named The Impact Team. This group got their hands on over 37 million accounts, which included banking information, addresses, and sexual preferences of the users.
Medical Informatics Engineering
This is another healthcare organization that came under attack, affecting more than 3.9 million users’ health records and social security numbers.
UCLA Health
Social security numbers of more than 4.5 million users were compromised during this attack.
August 2015
Wall Street
32 US based traders partnered up with Eastern European hackers as they worked together to gain access to the unpublished press releases. This of course allowed traders to gain an edge on Wall Street. This partnership reportedly allowed traders to get more than $100 million.
American Airlines Group, Inc. and Saber Corporation
It is reported that both the companies came under attack by a Chinese group of hackers going by the name of Black Vine, which resulted in the compromise of a large number of accounts.
September 2015
Trump Hotel Collection
Seven Trump hotels in US and Canada had their security breached, which affected information of the visitors that may have checked in at the hotels during May 2014 to June 2015.
Ecellus, BlueCross, BlueShield
Another attack on healthcare companies took place in September which affected at least 10 million of the customers.
October 2015
Experian
Hackers attacked the servers of Experian, affecting the credit assessment data of T-Mobile USA and company’s customers. The names, addresses, and social security numbers of more than 15 million people were compromised.
Scottrade
The hack on trade and investment organization was huge, as the hackers got their hands on the data of over 4.6 million users.
