After introducing the live location feature on its platform, WhatsApp, the world’s leading instant-messaging app, has joined the likes of Google Maps, Facebook Messenger, and Apple’s iMessage. This feature allows users to share their live location with their friends and family members on WhatsApp in real-time.
Sharing your live location with your close friends in real time is really necessary for today’s age where circumstances are often uncertain. Women and kids can really benefit from this feature by keeping their closed ones informed about their whereabouts.
WhatsApp did have a location feature for a long time but it was static and could only be shared for one-time, which means that users had to share their location again when they moved to a different place. With live location tracking, you do not have to share location repeatedly as it is dynamic in nature and keeps changing your position on the map as you move for a specified time interval.
How to Use Live Location Feature on WhatsApp
Let’s go ahead and find out how you can use the live location feature on WhatsApp. The process is pretty much similar for both Android and iPhone devices.
Before you begin using the live location feature on WhatsApp, make sure you have updated your app from the respective app stores. Once you are done updating the app, follow the guide below:
Step 1: Enable Location Services
Unless you’ve not enabled Location Services on your device, WhatsApp won’t be able to access your current location. Therefore, you need to turn it on by checking your Settings and then move forward.
Step 2: Open WhatsApp
Now, open your WhatsApp and then select the conversation of the person or the group whom you want to share your live location with.
Step 3: Select ‘Share Live Location’
Once the conversation window is opened, tap the + icon (iOS) and attach/paperclip icon (Android) and then select Location. If you have already updated the latest version of the app on your device, then you will come across the new option, ‘Share Live Location’. Simply tap it.
Step 4: Set the Timing
In the next step, you will be asked to set the time until you want your live location to be shared with the person or the group. There will be three time slots to choose from – 15 minutes, 1 hour and 8 hours. You can select your desired time slot. It will also give you an option of adding a caption which will be shared with the contact/group as any other message on WhatsApp. After you’ve chosen the time slot and added the caption, your live location will be shared with the selected contact/group for the specified time.
Step 5: Stop Sharing
WhatsApp also allows you to stop sharing your live location before the specified time ends. This can be done simply by tapping ‘Stop Sharing’ which is present below live location message. By confirming it, you will be able to put a stop to the live location sharing.
By launching this feature, WhatsApp has put another feather in its cap. It’s quite easy to use the new feature launched by WhatsApp. It helps you feel safer especially when you’re traveling alone somewhere because it keeps your contacts informed about your location.
