If you’re constantly updated about the IT world, then you must have heard about the Meltdown and Spectre CPU security flaws making rounds on the internet.
These two major processor security flaws emerged this week and have sent the IT world into a frenzy.
The IT industry has gotten together to fix these issues and secure the devices for customers.
Meltdown and Spectre CPU Security Flaws
Found in a number of processors from the ARM, AMD, and Intel, Spectre, and Meltdown are the two security flaws that could allow hackers to access encryption keys, passwords, and other private and confidential information from open applications.
These security flaws are sending shock waves through the entire IT industry. One of the members of Google’s Project Zero found out these flaws along with other people.
To be specific, it was revealed that these flaws had been present in the chip designs for over twenty years, affecting a number of companies’ processors. That indicates that the flaws could be found on a large number of devices including PCS, web servers, and mobile devices.
The Current Situation
As far as the current scenario is concerned, users shouldn’t panic much because so far, these Meltdown and Spectre CPU security flaws have not been used in an attack. Device manufacturers have already started working with the ARM, AMD, and Intel to fix these issues.
In fact, Intel has gone on to claim that these exploits cannot modify, corrupt, or erase the data. However, Spectre security flaw may need a processor redesign to get it fixed.
The future processors should be free from these security flaws. As a user, you need to keep a constant eye on any updates your mobile device offers and also follow our guide to understand how you can protect your device against these security flaws.
How to protect from the Meltdown and Spectre CPU security flaws
We have listed down ways to fix and protect your mobile devices against the Meltdown and Spectre CPU security flaws.
Fixing Meltdown and Spectre CPU Security Flaws on Android Phone
Last week, on January 5th, Google released a new security update to help protect your Android device against the Meltdown and Spectre CPU security flaws.
For Google-branded phones like Nexus 5X, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL, you will get the update instantly whereas the update should download and install automatically on Google’s newer devices.
The other Android phones may take a bit longer to get the update. However, with the speed manufacturers are working to get these flaws fixed, it wouldn’t take much longer for the users to get the update.
To fix the security flaws, simply head over to the Settings app on your Android phone, go to ‘System’ and see if you come across any new updates. You may also follow your phone’s manufacturer on Twitter to stay updated about the news regarding the update.
Fixing Meltdown and Spectre CPU Security Flaws on iPhone
In the wake of these security flaws, Apple has also revealed that all the iPhones have been affected by them. The company has released some mitigations for Meltdown in iOS 11.2, therefore users need to keep an eye out for any new updates made available for iOS on your iPhone or iPad. Simply go to ‘Settings’ and check what iOS version you are running.
For now, Apple has not announced that it also has a fix for Spectre but the company did mention that “We continue to develop and test further mitigations for these issues and will release them in upcoming updates of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.”
Let’s hope new mitigations are released to fix the Spectre CPU security flaw as well.
