While talking about Linux the important word that comes first in mind is DISTRO. Referencing wiki, Linux distribution is a member of the family of Unix-like operating systems built on top of the Linux kernel. Such distributions are operating systems including a large collection of software applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, media players, and database applications. These operating systems consist of the Linux kernel and, usually, a set of libraries and utilities from the GNU Project, with graphics support from the X Window System.
Simply talking they are the different Linux Operating systems having different specialties sometimes in content and sometimes in working. Since Linux is open source, many number of Distros are created and released by various programmers around the world. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora etc are the very famous among them which is designed for an ordinary computer user. The entire Linux Operating Systems can be classified to different variants .The main Linux variants are Suse Linux ,Debian Linux, Red hat Linux and Slackware Linux. Most of the Linux Distros are released under these variants.
