Top 25 Linux Applications for 2011 [ubuntu and linux mint]

I have been using various Linux Distro this month (mainly Ubuntu and linux mint) and while i was playing with various applications , I found that there are many applications which may be very useful or the once which we call the requirements in an OS. As most of the linux distributions and their applications are open source and free to download so why not try all those. To guide you through this I have found applications which i found useful and  I would like to share it with you.
So in this post I would be dealing with some of the Top 25 linux applications that I found to be useful. These applications varies from browsers, office management tools, Photo management tools , email client , etc.


Till now , windows remain the most popular operating system , thus its obvious that most applications which we find on net are developed on it than compared to other OSes. Most of windows based applications are executive (.exe) type so it can’t run in linux. In such cases you can use wine as it is capable of running windows application in linux. Using wine linux users can even run large and complicated application like microsoft office and photoshop, and is capable of running games like half life 2 and Starcraft II. Wine ensures that the windows users who have migrated to linux does not have to leave behind their favourite applications. Thus wine provides the users another reason to use open source operating system like linux.


You might be knowing about the well famous OpenOffice , owned by oracle now, which was used as an alternative to Microsoft office in Linux and grew very famous among Linux users. LibreOffice works on the same principle as that of OpenOffice software and like all other linux application it is available as open source. The latest news reveals that most of the active OpenOffice developers are now a part of LibreOffice. It is build on OpenOffice and is supposed to surpass its with the inclusion of  many community developed features and extensions that it provides. In general this reliable Linux App can be used as a  replacement for the old OpenOffice in all its aspects .


If you have used KDE, you would have most probably heard of this application called Digikam. It is an advanced digital photo management application for Linux, Windows and Mac-OSX. It is possibly the best image management applications and matches its features to some of the famous commercial applications such as adobe photoshop and Lightroom. Its features includes image fingerprinting, Exporting/Importing files on photo sharing services, and brilliant tagging , searching and editing support made it the best application of its kind. It also provides plugin support to ease the development and code share with other KDE applications.


Gimp is a well known Image editing application used in Linux. This GNU Image manipulation program is a versatile graphics manipulation package and this is at present the best Image editing tool in Linux. This brilliant image editing application is a well replacement against the windows well known Photoshop. Though , it isn’t one of the most simplest applications to use , with its extensive features and scripting support its more than just an photo editing tool. Recent news reveals that Gimp team is working on making Gimp to a more Photoshop like interface. Apart from Linux ,Gimp is also suported for windows , mac OS, Sun OpenSolaris and FreeBSD. It has a Customizable interface and features includes Photo Enhancement, Barrel Distortion , Digital retouching and much more can be added to it using extensions and plugins.

SCREENTOASTER (Gnome-Do / Krunner)

Gnome-Do or Krunner are the popular tools for searching and launching files and applications  for Linux . Screentoaster is a free web based screencasting tool that requires no installation and can record a movie of your full desktop screen , all you have to do is visit there site and click record. This can be used as a clear cut replacement of desktop applications such as CamStudio. Though this application has many uses , this undergo lots of downtimes.


VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD and various other streaming protocols and it works on most of the platforms like Windows, Linux, Mac and Unix. This application’s features ranges from playing youtube videos to encoding and saving streaming files to an unbuilt media library.


Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application which helps to manage e-book efficiently in Linux. This brilliant app is created by an Indian developer supports a number of unique features. It has features like managing your ebook library , convert ebook , sync to ebook reader devices, Download new feeds and convert them to ebook and also it can be used to set up a server to access your collections online.


Dropbox is a Web-based file hosting service that uses cloud computing to enable users to store and share their files and folders with others across the Internet using a fast file synchronization. It offers storage upto 2GB for free account and for paid service the storage space can be further increased. Thus it helps us to access our files from any parts of the world . Dropbox offers a relatively large number of user clients across a variety of desktop and mobile operating systems.


Blender is a free open source 3D graphics editor application, available under the GNU General Public License for almost all the platforms including Linux, Mac OS X,FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is capable of producing high quality rendered content and has been extensively used to make films such as Sintel and Elephants Dreams. Some of the other features includes video composing and editing and can also be used to make games.


As you all know Firefox is considered as one of the best Internet browsers available . With its large amount of addons collections and extensions its used widely by developers as well as normal users.  As for the case of Linux Firefox is supposed to be the best available browser for linux users.


Banshee has an awesome music library management features and support for online music stores and services, Banshee is considered to be one of the best music management application for various linux distributions. It also supports windows and Mac OS. You can Play your music and videos, Keep up with your podcasts and Internet radio and also Discover new music and podcasts.


Openshot is an open source video editing application for linux. It Supports many video, audio, and image formats and offers multi track editing with support for effects , filters, etc along with key framed animation.


Its is a free and easy to use virtualization solution which uses virtualisation technology and  is the easiest way to run multiple operating systems at the same time on your PC. With its user-friendly interface, VMware Player makes it effortless for anyone to try out Windows 7 or run the latest Linux release.


This is a browser which is most commonly use by many new internet users these days is a product from google. It is fast and has a nice user interface. Browser crashes are very less and its entirely focused on contents. Provides us fast search results and many free Google Chrome extensions are also available these days.


Koffice is another open source office suite like OpenOffice and LibreOffice. It is a great office suite for KDE and is gaining popularity due to its refreshing panel based interface. It can be used inplace of OpenOffice or Libreoffice.


Boxee is a cross Platform freeware  software application with a 10-foot user interface and social networking features designed for the living-room TV.  It has a powerful organisation with a great media recognition features and also great integration of online services and extensive social features.


Mozilla Thunderbird is one of the best open source, cross-platform e-mail and news client developed by the Mozilla Foundation. It is Easier to Get Started with its efficient mail account setup wizard. It contains tabbed email service , such as a different tab for different mails and the search interface in Thunderbird contains filtering and timeline tools to pinpoint the exact email you’re looking for. You can easily customize you email experience  and also Secure and Protect Your Email easily.


Handbrake is a linux tool which can be used for transcoding media files and ripping DVD’s for your PMP or other mobile devices. It is available for linux , mac OS X and windows. Profiles for many popular devices including apple , ipod and android are also included.


Brasero is a application to burn CD and DVD for linux. It is designed to be as simple as possible and has some unique features to enable users to create their discs easily and quickly. You can easily burn any kind of audio CD , Vidro DVD’s ,etc with just a few clicks.


This application is an alternative for all those students who use mathlab for their projects . It works very efficiently and is less compatible with Mathlab than FreeMat and GNU Octave but has more unique features than those.


The Ubuntu One service is almost similar to services like  in SpiderOak,  Dropbox,,  Mozy,  Wuala,  Humyo,  iDisk,  Jungle Disk and Live Mesh. Its a file synchronisation software and it is easier to backup and sync files online and share it with others. The latest features include streaming and sharing music on your android and iphones.


Unetbootin is a simple and efficient utility by which you can create a live USB pendrives from a live CD or DVD iso image file. It can be used to make any Linux based distribution to boot from your pendrive. It then makes your flash drive bootable & makes it behave just as a normal regular Linux installation CD.


Virtual box is one of the greatest virtualisation software available as open source. Its functions are similar to VMWare but its not as easy to use as compared to the later. Though it is not easy to use it contains more features and holds up well to VMWare workstation as well.


Pidgin is an easy to use and free chat client used to connect chat accounts of different social network together in a singlre chat cleint. Connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and more chat networks all at once. It supports many chat networks such as AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MXit, MySpace IM, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo, Zephyr and also facebook. Pidgin is available for windows also apart from many linux distributions.


GnuCash is personal and small-business financial-accounting software, open source and freely licensed linux application. It is available for GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. GnuCash has full support for double-entry book-keeping and many great features. This Financial management app is worth giving a try.

There are many other useful Linux application available. This list is only shows a few of the top applications that i liked.
