Visual effects or CGI always had important role to play in the movies, but now it has been done in almost every single movie that comes out. The implementation was poor back in the day, but now it is absolutely fantastic. Planet of the Apes movies, superhero movies, Disney movies, and others that require CGI are absolute top notch. The visual effects are implemented so brilliantly that they bring a whole new life to the characters. If we start to give examples of all the great usages of CGI, then it would take us ages, but we have highlighted the top 10 uses of visual effects, and explained how they completely changed the whole point of view of the users.
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is not just a TV show anymore, it has become a phenomenon. Almost everyone in every corner of the world knows about it and most likely has watched it. This show is one of the finest examples of CGI usage. From Dragons to huge battles, most of the stuff that happens in the show is based on visual effects. The backdrops you see is basically a green screen. Same is the case with explosions and fires, all of it is CGI but it is done so well that we don’t notice it at all. The image above is a great example of how we see things vs. how they actually are. This is the age we live in now. Green screen is the magic. There is no way a Game of Thrones show would’ve worked in the 90s because the technology wasn’t evolved. However, at this stage, we have a living breathing world of Game of Thrones and we love it.
300 – Rise of an Empire
300 was a great movie and was a pinnacle of CGI creativity. However, the sequel was a lot better in terms of visual effects as it gave us more battles and they happened on a larger scale. Most of it was CGI including the ship scenes, but they were crafted so beautifully that it was difficult for anyone to find a flaw. The large scale battles especially at the end were also made using CGI effects and they were brilliant as well.
Alice in the Wonderland
We’ve heard the story of Alice in the Wonderland and we have seen the animated version of it. However, when it was announced that a live-action adaptation would be made, a lot of people were on fence and were worried as how will the studio handle the fictional stuff. Thanks to CGI, the studio was able to do a mind boggling job as they brought all the fan-favorite characters to the live-action screen. Alice in the Wonderland opened the door for other popular stories to be told in live-action, and we have gotten some amazing new adaptations, with a lot more still to come.
It wouldn’t be a CGI article without talking about Godzilla. The Godzilla that came out back in early 21st century was in a league of its own because at that time, not a lot of people had seen a CGI movie done so well. It became a commercial hit and for the right reasons, people wanted to see the legendary Dinosaur in action, and they got that in the amazing adaptation. Even to this day, Godzilla is regarded as one of the best CGI works of all time.
The Guardians of the Galaxy
Rocket and Groot in The Guardians of the Galaxy are everyone’s favorite, and both of them have been given life thanks to the CGI. Their look, their expressions, and their feelings are presented so amazingly that it is only natural to like them. The dialogues and moves are secondary, and they’re obviously really well done, but the fact that the studio was able to bring a tree and a raccoon to life, and made it so that people would actually like them is an achievement on its own. Props to Marvel Comics for giving this project a chance, so that we could get two amazing movies in the universe.
Life of Pi
Life of Pi is another movie filled with CGI scenes. From the Tiger, to the flood, to the Island, to the dream sequence, everything is visual effects. And just like every other movie in the list, they are crafted so beautifully that it’s hard to tell the difference. Life of Pi went on to become critical and commercial hit and is regarded as one of the best movies ever made. CGI is not always about bringing the action, it can also be used to tell a story, which Life of Pi did successfully.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Planet of the Apes movies have been made before, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes was exceptional because of amazing implementation of CGI. The atmosphere, the characters felt real and opened the doors for sequels which were equally fantastic.
Superhero movies have been utilizing CGI really well and one of the best examples of that was The Avengers. The whole alien invasion was done really well and it was all thanks to visual effects. We got to see the invasion, a ton of enemies, and some over the top action. Without proper CGI, all of this would be impossible and we wouldn’t have laid eyes on one of the best superhero movies ever made.
The Dark Knight
Speaking of Superhero movies, The Dark Knight is another great example of CGI. The action once again comprised mostly of CGI backdrops. Two-Face didn’t really have to get a ton of make up on his face just to look the part as the studio was able to achieve the result with the help of visual effects. All the explosions were also done with the help of CGI and they looked remarkable. The Dark Knight is usually remembered because of the Joker but visual effects played a huge role in its success as well.
The Hobbit trilogy is another great example of the CGI. Smaug, the Dragon looked so real as well as the orcs during the movie, and once again, the credit for that goes the visual effects team. Without their efforts we wouldn’t have gotten to see Hobbit or even Lord of the Rings movies. CGI played a huge role in both of these franchises and made them the phenomenon that they are today.
